Heart palpitations caused by anemia?
I am 18 years old and was recently diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. Days prior to said diagnosis and ever since then, I’ve occasionally noticed some minor heart palpitations (ex. Feeling of my heart skipping a beat, sometimes slight pressure there, etc) and was wondering if the anemia was likely the cause? I tend to freak out when it happens and give myself something of a panic attack, so some peace of mind would be great. Thank you all so much!
Is it all in my mind or is what I feel real?
I’m a 21 year old female, slightly overweight, smoker and I have GAD.
I’ve been ill for a week or so with a sinus infection that is getting betters slowly, but surely with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds. On a daily basis I take 75 mg of Lyrica in the mornings and 5 mg of Diazepam mid-day and at night I take 2 mg of Tizanidine.
Okay, so you know what I take for the GAD and panic attacks and muscle tightness. My issue is sometimes I can’t tell whether the pain I’m feeling is all in my head or real because my doctors, family, friends, everyone blames my complaints on my anxiety. The thing is I can’t believe that even when I am at my calmest, my anxiety is causing heart palpitations, angina, spinal pain, muscle spasms, shoulder and neck tightness constantly??? I have told my otolaryngologist, my internist, my psychiatrist, my GP and even my gynecologist about these things and they just throw pills at me which I eventually take because nothing else helps (meditation, resting, exercise,).
I just want to know if what I’m feeling is real because no one else seems to believe me, but it hurts and eventually leads me to panic. I just don’t want to be crazy, but I don’t want to have something that needs medical attention either. This is so frustrating.
Thanks for your answers in advanced.
Thank you for the information so far.
All of my doctors know what I’m taking, however I was just recently prescribed the Tizanidine for the muscle tightness in my shoulders and chest. I’ve been on Lyrica and Valium for about 9-10 months. I recently quit Alprazolam that I was prescribed for anxiety (which helped, but I got addicted to it) which is why I’m taking the Pregabalin for anti-seizure. The Valium is really all I have to be honest considering for 5 years I suffered from panic attacks that would constrict me to my home for months on end. I’ve been using the Valium now for a couple months without the Xanax (I was on a crap load of tranquilizers), however the panic has been showing up much more often no matter how much I distract myself. The tizanidine doesn’t really help either, but it makes me groggy which is something I prefer considering my insomnia.
Oh, yes I know that nicotine isn’t great and usually it causes panic attacks, however I’ve been a smoker since I was 13 and even though I’ve quit an abundance of illegal drugs, alcohol, nicotine and the alprazolam, it’s been very hard to even try to quit the cigarettes. I only take my medication and smoke cigs and I’m trying to get off of everything at some point. I’m just taking it step by step.
*Meant to say caffeine and not nicotine in my last post.
Concerns with Current Health?
As of late I have become increasingly aware of my health. Just for background information, I currently work two full time jobs. One is at a lumber yard, the other at a local Wal-mart. My work time equals 13+ hours, 6 days a week. Only adding this information as I think it may have something to do with my declining health. Also, A couple of weeks ago I had a flu, followed by what I thought was an ear infection. When I went to the doctors to have my "ear infection" examined, they found I had an irregular reading on a ECG they took after I mentioned I have heart palpitations that come and go but typically last a week. They noted that I had a Block of electrical current to the right side of my heart’s muscles. I have not been able to follow up with more tests due to costs.
As of lately, I have noticed the following things occur. My eye sight has gotten increasingly worse. I went to have an eye examination only to find my vision went from 20/20 to 20/30. Not a huge deal, but still worth mentioning. The true issues I’m noticing are blurring close and far vision, as well as a higher sensitivity to light, especially to lights while driving at night. My sense of balance has also been off, as well as my sense of perception and spacial reasoning. In the last two weeks Ive inadvertently backed up into two snow banks and a mailbox. This bothers me because I used to have extremely good peripheral vision. I also do not feel physically strong, despite feeling perfectly normal (fatigue wise). The worse part is what I’ve noticed next. My ability to spell, type, recall, and speak have gone down the tubes, and this happened suddenly. This is disturbing, particularly for me as I was well known for being a exceptional speaker, speller, and while my recall memory was never great, it has gotten worse.
I have a few theories about what might be going on, one of which could easily be stress and fatigue, but I wanted to have the community take a look at everything and give me their best opinion.
I should also note that in the last few weeks Ive gone on a handful of dates that I knew I wasn’t on my "A" game with. I am usually suave and confident, always flirting and usually always ending the night perfectly. The last dates have been more like I just want to get the date over and go home. I cant muster myself to flirt, and If I do it is over the top and rude. I avoid making any physical contact for some odd reason, and I find myself depressed the whole way through. Don’t know if this correlates to the issue, but I figured Id mention it anyways
Basically I feel like I am becoming a shell of my former self. : (
*NOTE* I am a 20 year old male. I have had mono, and am aware that it never goes away, but is rather subdued by your immunity.
Is chest pain after strenuous exercise normal…?
Sometimes after i do heavy exercise i get a bad ache/crushing feeling in my chest which is accompanied most of the time by nausea and a cough (also shortness of breath but everyone gets out of breath after heavy exercise i think), this happens mainly when i’m ice skating or on the trampoline in the cold air and seems to happen less often when i’m inside. I’m only 14 but my grandma has angina and my dad had a bicuspid valve and aortic aneurysm (he had an operation to fix it), my mum has aortic regurgitation and is having medical investigations into her heart palpitations. I’m also very tired but i’m a vegan and i think i’m lacking in nutrient’s so it’s probably a different issue entirely. I have had this pain for a few months and am wondering if it’s normal for people to get this? It goes away a few minutes after i stop exercise but it only happens with very heavy exercise and not very often so i’m not sure if i should bother seeing a doctor. Thanks!
