NANAIMO – New research shows Canadians are in denial when it comes to their risk factors for heart disease. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says there is a serious disconnect between what people think they are doing to keep their heart healthy and what they actually are doing. As Canadians we think we’re healthier. We think we eat better and exercise more – than we actually do. According to a report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada about 90 percent of us think we’re healthy, but statistics show that half of us are overweight, 25 percent obese, and 50 percent of us don’t get enough exercise or eat enough fruit and vegetables. We’re kidding ourselves – and it’s killing us. The report says 250000 years of potential life is lost per year by cardiovascular disease in Canada. And it’s not that we’re unaware of the risks. In fact, according to the survey, nine out of ten Canadians know that first time heart attacks are caused by factors they can control.
